Galleries and Cultural Life
Places to see and exhibit art online, on campus, and in Pittsburgh are proliferating! In this section you can find links to the School of Art’s online galleries – ETB (Electronic & Time-Based Media), BFA, and MFA graduating classes – as well as physical venues on and off campus.
School of Art undergraduates and graduates are regularly involved in regional exhibitions in addition to our BFA and MFA thesis shows, and many exhibit along with faculty on a national and international scale. Listings of events can be found on our main News, Events & Calendars page as well as the monthly ARTSCAN e-newsletter.
We’re always interested in expanding and experiencing new spaces and contexts for art, so if you know of a venue that is not mentioned here, email us (artscool
andrew.cmu.edu) and we’ll be glad to add you to the list.

2008 Performance/Music Video, Ben Kinsley (MFA ‘08) and Assistant Professor
Jon Ruibin
A two-part project that brought together a medieval battle society (Angaron)
with a fantasy metal band (Colossus). Part one of this project consisted of
a live performance in front of the Mattress Factory Museum during opening
night, in which Angaron was summoned forth from a parked Uhaul truck to
fight to the live music of Colossus who happens to be performing in an
adjacent truck. This 3 hour performance was presented using the conceptual
and organizational structure of a music video shoot; complete with props,
multiple camera operators, theatrical lighting, smoke machines, traffic
controlling police officers and the start and stop direction found in
commercial video production.
Part two of the project consisted of the screening and selling of the
resulting music video in the museum’s gift shop as well as the distribution
of DVD copies by Colossus and Angaron for self-promotional purposes.

During opening night of the 2008 MFA thesis exhibit, The Langley High School
Marching Band (Pittsburgh, PA) performed their normal parade routine once
every hour throughout the three floors of the Regina Gouger Miller Gallery
(including the elevator and stairwell). The various marches were captured on
tape using the gallery surveillance system, and the footage was subsequently
reedited to reveal a perpetual parade through the gallery.
