Position Announcements

Kraus Visiting Professorship
Carnegie Mellon University School of Art
One-semester artist residency in either Fall of 2009 or Spring of 2010

The School of Art (SOA) at Carnegie Mellon University is announcing 2 one-semester visiting professorships. We are seeking a dynamic artist committed to a creative practice that may include interdisciplinarity, collaboration, and various media and models of art making. The Kraus Visiting Professor will teach one class, conduct occasional senior project/graduate student critiques, maintain a visible studio practice, and present a lecture in the School of Art Lecture Series. A private studio will be provided, with access to tools and facilities including foundry, wood shop, clay, metal-working and computer aided fabrication.

The School of Art is one of five schools in the College of Fine Arts, which also includes the Schools of Architecture, Design, Drama and Music. Its undergraduate and graduate curricula include innovative media and concept classes, contextual practice, history and theory, as well as university academic study. Areas of concentration include Painting, Drawing and Printmaking (PDP); Sculpture, Installation, and Site-Work (SIS); Electronic and Time-Based Work (ETB); and Contextual Practice (CP). For the residencies we are seeking artists in the areas of either SIS or PDP.

The School consists of 23 full-time faculty, 9 staff members, about 200 undergraduates and 18 graduate students. In addition to BFA and MFA degrees in Art, interdisciplinary degrees are offered in collaboration with other colleges in the university. The School co-administrates the university’s Miller Gallery, and is actively involved with the STUDIO for Creative Inquiry and Center for the Arts in Society, unique centers for interdisciplinary arts research and education. Carnegie Mellon University is located in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, which has been cited as being the “Best Arts Destination” among mid-sized cities and one of the USA’s most affordable and livable places. In addition to the Carnegie Museum of Art, the Andy Warhol Museum, the Mattress Factory, Pittsburgh Filmmakers and The Pittsburgh Glass Center, the city has a vibrant young art scene that includes many small galleries and alternative exhibition opportunities.

The biannual Kraus Visiting Professorship is made possible through the generous support of Jill Gansman Kraus and Peter Kraus.
