Interdisciplinary Degree Programs
Each of these degree programs consists of approximately 40 courses. The major difference between the BHA/BSA/BCSA Art degrees and the BFA Art degree is the ratio of art to non-art courses. BFA students take at least 30 art courses and approximately 10 non-art courses; BHA /BSA/BCSA students are required to take 11 art courses and at least 30 non-art courses. BHA/BSA/BCSA students usually take one or two art courses per semester. Art is a choice for students within these programs for philosophical and structural reasons. The Director of the BHA/BSA/BCSA Programs, Franco Sciannameo, is the primary advisor to BHA/BSA/BCSA students and teaches the BHA/BSA/BCSA Freshman Research Seminar that examines the two main paradigms that form the basis of research in various fields of inquiry: 1) the systematic, scientific or positivist approach; 2) the qualitative, ethnographic, and ecological or naturalistic one.Bachelor of Humanities and Arts Degree (BHA)
The College of Fine Arts (CFA) and the College of Humanities and Social Sciences offer a Bachelor of Humanities and Arts (BHA) degree, which uniquely combines the strengths of both colleges. The BHA program enables a student to receive broader exposure to the liberal arts than is generally possible through a Bachelor of Fine Arts degree. Correspondingly, this degree enables broader exposure in the fine arts than is generally possible through a Bachelor of Arts or Bachelor of Science degree in H&SS.Bachelor of Science and Arts Degree (BSA)
CFA and the Mellon College of Science (MCS) offer a Bachelor of Sciences and Arts (BSA) degree, which combines the strengths of the two colleges and satisfies the needs of students who have strong interests in both the sciences and the arts. The BSA program enables a student to pursue two concentrations: one in science and one in fine arts.Bachelor of Computer Science and Arts Degree (BCSA)
The newest interdisciplinary degree program is the Bachelor of Computer Science and Art, offered by the School of Computer Science and the College of Fine Arts. It provides an ideal technical, critical and conceptual foundation for students interested in pursuing fields which comprehensively meld technology and the arts, such as game design, computer animation, computer music, interactive stagecraft, robotic art, and other emerging media. The School of Art has taken a leadership position in treating interdisciplinary degree and BFA students equally with regard to access to School of Art courses.
