Pre-College
Introduction
The School of Art sponsors two pre-college programs for high school students: an academic year program which meets on Saturday mornings, and a six-week full-time summer program. Pittsburgh regional high school students from 9th through 12th grades have been active in the academic year program for over forty years. A broad spectrum of students from across the country has participated in the summer program over three decades.
The Pre-College programs introduce high school students to the spirit and substance of the School of Art’s undergraduate curriculum, preparing them to apply to and work within a college-level art program. Both the academic-year program and the six-week summer program introduce students to an art school culture and environment. There are several underlying objectives for these high school programs:
- stimulating artistic growth and development,
- emphasizing exploration, analysis and discovery,
- establishing a connection between creative and intellectual development,
- exposing students to contemporary and historical perspectives,
- presenting a broad spectrum of both new and established media processes and technologies, and
- stimulating creative development through independently generated projects.
The Pre-College faculty consists of professional artists and educators who exhibit locally, nationally and internationally and who are committed to helping emerging artists develop their visions. A low student/teacher ratio allows for much individual attention as class sizes typically range from 12 to 16 students.
