MFA Application Process

The following materials constitute a complete application:

1. Completed application form (click here to download).
2. Professional resume.
3. Official transcripts of all college work (sent directly from institutions).
4. Names, addresses and telephone numbers of three (3) references. (No reference letters are to be sent at this time).
5. Two-page statement of purpose that reveals an understanding of and interest in this particular M.F.A. curriculum.
6. $50 application fee (non-refundable), in the form of a check payable to Carnegie Mellon University. (Please do not send cash.)
7. Materials for the Creative Work Review as described here.
8. Include a stamped self-addressed envelope for return of materials.
9. Applicants whose native language is not English must submit TOEFL scores. The new Internet Based TOEFL (IBT) test evaluates reading, listening, speaking, and writing abilities. A score between 20-27 on each section of the new TOEFL IBT is required for admission. Minimum traditional TOEFL scores of 250 computer based / 600 paper are required for admission. The Institution Code is: 2074.

All materials must be postmarked by January 23, 2009 to be considered for admission for fall 2009. Incomplete applications not meeting the requirements will not be reviewed. Do not submit original artwork or documentation – submit duplicates only. The School of Art is not responsible for loss of, or damage to, submitted materials. No information regarding admission status will be available by telephone. Applicants will be notified of admission, waiting list or non-admission status by April 1, 2009. No application materials will be returned until the official notification process has been completed, on or about May 15, 2009.

A visit to the campus, though not required, is highly recommended.
